Banner Gateway Medical Center is a five-story replacement facility providing obstetrics, pediatrics, general surgery and emergency services. Its current 165 private beds can expand up to 536 with two additional bed-towers over time. Its design reflects the “smart growth” challenges of emerging cities to create healthy, safe and livable communities.

Banner Health was faced with a decision about whether to renovate its aging Mesa facility or relocate to better serve the growing needs of the Gilbert community. Research showed that renovation would have been as expensive and carbon-intensive as building and opening a new hospital. Banner Health chose to adaptively reuse the Mesa facility as medical offices and develop a stretch of desert that sits at the crossroads of major freeways.
