123 West is an honest, modern interpretation of Friday Harbor, WA. It is designed as seven residential units atop seven commercial units fitting the owner’s program to create opportunities to live where one works and work where one lives. All are accessible from public open space in, around and throughout the site. A sinuous rain water catchment system weaves down the site culminating in a new town landmark reminiscent of its prior industrial past. Development challenges were many; a challenging steep rock hillside, shoreline and view setbacks, community reluctance to change, remnants and prior oil storage facility contamination, and the perceived constraints of what constitutes historic context.
