The “Little Sister of Liberty” is a West Seattle icon donated by the Sea and Boy Scouts in 1952 (one of 200 such statues around the country). Since 2001, the statue becomes a temporary memorial around September 11th. Vandalism and deterioration motivated concerned citizens to raise funds to recast the statue, rebuild the pedestal and create a new public setting for the landmark. We worked, pro bono, with the diverse, active community to develop a consensus design, raise funds, help navigate the bureaucracy, and make a vibrant public space for civic gathering and private contemplation.
