How do we define the heritage of a special piece of land? We could reach back 15 million years when erupting volcano’s left behind a basalt layer that covers much of our State, or 15 thousand years when the great floods left behind erratic stones and silty top soil from Montana. We could consider the wind driven Palouse soils that formed the soft rolling hills supporting bunch grass and wild rye until the first wheat was planted 200 years ago. Here, the architecture is the true embodiment of these eras. Its subterranean basalt base partially exposed like the many black cliffs that were scoured by the floods centuries ago. Wind swept arching roofs covered in native grasses tell the story of the Palouse. Tomorrow there will be vineyards - the new crop planted by this generation will cover the remaining contours and will bear fruit that will become some of the best wine in the world. This timeless iconic structure surrounded with its rolling vineyards, is L’Eritage.
